When you plan to go camping, the first thought that comes to your mind is a packing list. If you are thinking the same then you are on the right track. Before you go you must know what to pack and what not to pack. Since camping locations are generally remote, then it gets a bit tricky with a comprehensive list of things to be backed and it should also fit in the bags you are going to carry. The list below is applicable for both backpackers and general campers since it entails the essentials.

After being several years on the road and experiencing the coolest off beaten tracks. I am sharing a few tips and tricks with you. It will make your next holiday a life-changing experience.

Make a list

Yes, you read it right, you have to make a list. This step is vital as it will help you pack all you need for your next adventure. The list will also help you keep track of all you are carrying with you. 

The list should have information on all the essential items that you are going to carry and if you can make it on a spreadsheet. Tick it off once you have packed every item.  

Finalize a location

It is of utmost importance for you to decide which location you are going for your next camping trip. Selecting a location upfront solves a lot of your problems that you may face otherwise. All your preparation for the camping trip depends on the location. 

For instance, if you choose a remote place like a mountain. Then the list of items you must carry would be different than going near the bank of a river. You might have to carry a different set of items for camping by the riverside than on the mountains. 

Once a location is finalized, then you would research the facilities that the place has on offer. It could be things like water supply, electricity, network signals and food.

You can search on the internet or watch a Youtube video and get information about camping trips. The information available on the internet about camping is generic. They are applicable for all sorts of locations. They might not be suitable for the place you are going to.

Once I went on a camping trip to the Himalayas. That was my first trip to the location I was going to. I was thrilled by the experience I had but it came with a lot of challenges. The challenges I faced, could have been avoided. They were not inevitable. When I went camping again in the same location I could see a difference. It was easy as opposed to difficult earlier. This effortless and painless experience boils down to the fact that I knew what I had to carry with me and what I was expecting in terms of facilities at the camping location. 

I learnt it the hard way – unfortunately one of my fellow campers met with an accident too. You don’t have to repeat the same mistake I made. You can easily avoid those mistakes by asking and seeking information about the place you are going to in a local campers Facebook group. 

Camping gear 

These are essential gears that you must carry with you regardless of any location you chose for your camping trip. 

1. Tent: If you have a camper van or take your car with you then ensure you pack your tent in a way that you can take it out easily. Whilst packing a tent ensure you are not missing any components like poles, stakes and mallets etc. 
2. Sleeping bag: Carry a lightweight sleeping bag that can be compressed easily. Use better quality ones that are not easily turned. You can also carry sleeping pads for extra comfort. 
3. Portable lights: It is a must-have item you need. Many times you will have no electricity facilities in remote places. Carry portable LED lights or camping lanterns. 
4. Firewoods: You are going to need them no matter where you go :D. Some areas don’t allow you to collect firewoods. Make sure you have them beforehand. 

Cookware

1. Cooking utensils: Carry a Knife, spatula, ladle, potholders, tongs, and tin foil are all useful tools
2. Pots and pans: Get one good pot and pan. You can use a large one for group camping and a small one for backpacking. 
3. Stove: A stove with two burners would make cooking less complicated. It saves your time too. 
4. Lighter: Ensure you carry more than one lighter or matchbox with you. Get waterproof lighters or matchboxes. 
5. Dishes: Bring one set of dishes for one individual like 1 pate, 1 bowl, 1 mug. 
6. Cleaner: Tissues or microfiber towels are a must-carry item You could also carry paper towels. They should be coupled with large plastic bags to store trash. 

Clothing 

When packing clothes keep in mind that you don’t carry any unnecessary piece of cloth with you. You can wear bulky clothes on the day of travel as it will help you save space. Pack as least amount of clothes as you can. Make sure to bring necessary clothes like the waterproof fabric of its rainy season or the place where you are going to receive rain. 

Electronics

Electronic items could be a matter of confusion as to which ones to carry and which ones to leave behind. Some people bring all electronic items even if they don’t use all of them. Just bring those items that you need and avoid any unnecessary gadgets or accessories.  

1. Phone: We cannot think of a life without a phone now. Please inspect and ensure that your phone is free from any major issues. If there is any problem then get it fixed before the trip. 
2. Camera: Bring a nice and compact camera with you to capture images as you travel along. Get a camera that has a good battery and lasts longer because you might not get a chance to charge your camera every time you need to. 
3. Charger: Bring all necessary chargers to charge all your electronic gadgets like Phone, Lantern/LED lights, camera etc. 
4. Portable Power backup: Power Banks are a must-carry item when you travel let alone a camping trip. You are going to need it to charge your phone and camera. 

First Aid Kit

Last but not least, you need a First Aid Kit. It is a must-have item on your list. It should be on your priority list. It is wise to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. Having a First Aid kit will provide you with confidence and peace of mind. If you meet with minor injuries then the kit will be worth it.
