Here are the top 7 tips for you to get offbeat travel experiences
Do your Homework
It may sound cliche as typical travel guidebooks. But you need to do your research before you travel. There is plenty of information on the internet that can lead you to the quiet corner of the world without worrying too much about the overflow of tourists around.
You have to keep a few things in mind whilst choosing the tourist places. You have to look for a country or city or island where not too many tourists visit. The inflow of tourists should be lower. Lower the inflow of tourists better the place to visit for the off-beaten track.
Hire a car or a motorbike
By far the most breathtaking experiences I have ever had comes from exploring a place on a motorbike. Forget hiring a taxi, getting a driver or restricting yourself to public transport. They come with restrictions like a fixed time of operations, do not always take you where you want to go, not available the moment you want to go and much more. It costs you more than renting a motorbike or a car.
The best thing with getting a bike or car rental and driving yourself is that you can go to any place you want, able to stop as long as you want and map out more creative and memorable journeys that you will never forget.
In addition, after doing proper research. You will be able to go to all those places where a local would go. Isn’t that amazing in and of itself?
Find local traveller Facebook groups
Doing a search on Google or asking other tourists will always lead you to overcrowded tourist places or places that are already receiving massive amounts of visitors.
Whereas getting into a local traveller Facebook group can help you to know more about your destination. It will enable you to map out your travel plans easily. It’s not always that locals would know what you want or which kind of places you are looking for. But in traveller groups, your fellow traveller has more knowledge and often leads you to the exact place or track you are looking for.
Travel slow
The idea of slow travel might not appeal to everyone but if you have the time in hand then get on the road and travel slowly. If you have limited time or you are on a tight schedule. Then you have no option but to prioritise and visit the main tourist attractions of the city or the country you are visiting.
But I reckon you will miss the opportunity to find and explore the hidden gems that are in existence on the fringe of the main tourist attractions. Oftentimes I have experienced travelling slow unearth and gets you in places like you would never imagine exists nearby the tourist places you are in. You will be mesmerised by the hidden gems as a result of slow travel.
Make Local Friends
One of the best benefits of slow travel is that you can make local friends as you travel. Making local friends open doors to more offbeat travel experiences. Interacting with them will educate you more about the local culture, tradition, food etc. Not only that but also you will know more about the secret spots that you can visit in their country.
Furthermore, with locals, you can find the best local food and explore the locality and will have a local perspective to the place. That means you are getting the authentic taste of that very place.
Broaden your horizon and start making local friends as you travel along unlike standard backpackers or tourists who are missing out on this beautiful experience. There are many people out there waiting for you 🙂
Learn the language
It’s easier said than done. It’s not that easy for you to learn a local language overnight. One may ask why do I need to learn a local language? Can’t I just speak English and get my work done?
Well yes, you can just speak English and travel through places without having any major issues. But if you can learn a few basic words and phrases of the local language then it makes travelling a whole lot easier. Especially when you travel on off beaten tracks. It will help you navigate through local transports easily. Moreover, you can negotiate more with knowing the local languages for places to stay and for food to eat.
Do a google search on top phrases and note them down into your notebook and start practising them. You will start speaking like a local in no time…lol
Don’t be afraid
Spontaneous surprises and unexpected experiences are one of the most satisfying. Once you finish the trip you will never forget that very trip and want to go back on similar trips and follow similar trails.
To get off the beaten track you have to make some sacrifices. You have to be prepared to compromise the facilities and the level of comfort you get in typical travels like a hot bath, breakfast, comfortable stay etc.
With these sacrifices, you will unlock the true meaning of travelling by having in-depth knowledge and experience of the places than an average traveller. In my opinion, that’s the purpose of travelling.
Don’t be afraid, go out on an off beaten track and enjoy your journey.
